5 Tips for Packing for A touR

As I have assisted a variety of performers, from clown acts to solo performers to burlesque artists to magicians, I have learned a few helpful tips on packing so that there is a minimum of head-aches and .the props and costumes actually get where they need to go (and undamaged, at that). Take a look at some of the things to consider if you are a touring fringe artist...

  • TIP 1 - What Kind of Show Do You Have? - Are you traveling with a bunch of props and equipment? Ask yourself, "What do I need for this show to be successful? What do I need for it to even happen?"

  • TIP 2 - Do your research - Knowing the ins and outs of your destination will help you gain a better sense of how to pack with ruthless efficiency. Will it be hot or cold? Will you have access to a washer/dryer? What is the billet like?

  • TIP 3 - How Are You Getting There? - Driving? If so, are you sharing the ride with others? Flying? Bus? Train? Will you need to take a bicycle? Checking bags at the airport carries an implicit risk. There is also a weight limit. If you are carpooling, keep in mind that others will need space, too.

  • TIP 4 - Get it When You Get There - Need tape to hang posters? Water? Basic toiletries? Duct tape? The local Dollar Store (or equivalent) is a good place to grab cheap supplies upon arrival.

  • TIP 5 - What Can You Ditch? - How can you lighten your load for the return trip? Are certain props disposable?

Had a chance to check out the Tuscon Fringe Fest recently. The Tuscon Fringe Festival has been operating since 2011. This year (January 13-15, 2017) the fest featured 21 shows over 3 days in 4 different venues. Here's a couple of pics from that trip.
